More than 170 years of the tourist tradition

Opatija Riviera

Opatija, with more than 170 years of tourist tradition, is the oldest tourist destination in Croatia. The entire Riviera took its name after Opatija.

It was created at the place where the Adriatic Sea rises towards the top of the highest Kvarner mountain – Učka. Here the climates of the sea and the mountains merge and mix to give a specific climate of health, mild winters and warm summers.

Emperors, kings and princesses of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy preferred to spend their winters on its shores. That’s why they built Opatija Rivera, 170 years ago, after falling in love with it.

Opatija

Some of the Opatija’s symbols are:

  • a coastal promenade “Lungomare” over 10 km long, that hugs the coast from Lovran past Opatija and to the Volosko
  • the “Maiden with the Seagull” statue on the cliff
  • St. Jacob’s church and park
  • Juraj Matija Šporer art pavilion
  • numerous fountains, parks, promenades
  • hotels and restaurants with a rich gastronomic offer
